My iPod (a U2 Special Edition) finally kicked the bucket some time ago, its hard disk crashed due to constant use as a backup drive (I know, I know – never again).
Fortunately, Ruby gave me an iPod nano to play with, as a gift for passing the bar. Have I mentioned that my girlfriend is the best? Well, now I have.
Anyway, I used to just indiscriminately dump music into my iPod and sort ‘em all out later, culling the least played tracks every now and then.
Now, given a fresh start and admittedly fewer gigs of storage, I have to go about this more carefully. What music to take with me, and what music to leave on the sidewalk? The “rules of recognition” emerging so far:
1. I’m discarding most of my blues music (some of them ripped from the CD’s that accompanied Martin Scorcese’s Blues documentary). The nature of my job is necessarily a downer. I don’t need extra push to get me into that zone.
2. I’m keeping my “running music” – most of them anime-based rock instrumentals.
3. I’m keeping my Eraserheads and Parokya ni Edgar. ‘Nuff said.
4. Sorry, My Chemical Romance. See you later, Snow Patrol.
5. ABBA? WTF? Yes, because I’m bloody-minded that way.
6. Yes, there will be Battlestar Galactica tracks. And my video game music and my LOTR soundtrack. Because I’m still a geek and you have no right to judge me.
And…that’s all for now. Keeping things light and open ended so I can put in new music rather than just shoveling crap from one ipod to another. Any suggestions?

Post-rock, most definitely. Mono just came out with a new record, and they’re Japanese pa. Perkier? Math rock. You can start with the most accessible: Minus The Bear, or if you want a dance hybrid, there’s The Foals.
And if you can never go wrong with guys like Bon Iver and Beirut.
