Mowelfund Film Institute and Alliance Fran?aise de Manille present

Riles (Railways) a mini festival of Filipino contemporary short movies and a special tribute to young Philippine filmmakers on July 25 & 26, 2001. On July 25, will be screened short movies on social issues in the modern Philippines approached with humor, poetry, gloom, provocation or simple glance to merciless reality. On July 26, the the festival will explore some Filipino identities in crisis ( the eldest, the gay, the black mestizo) through experimental short movies and will be capped by the screening of Anino by Raymond Red, the only Filipino enshrined with Golden Palm in Cannes Festival 2000.

All these short films are drawn from the catalog of Mowelfund Film Institute and fall under several categories: social, personal, animated, and experimental. Directed by multi-awarded young filmmakers, they might be an unique opportunity to discover another Filipino creativity off the commercial circuits.

Part I: A World without Mercy: Social Realities in the 21st century Philippines

Anak Maynila (Manila Child) (6:00 min.)
Animation film, by Nonoy Dadivas & Dange Desembrana. A subtle and moving combination of animation and real pictures of a mother who desperately tries to rid herself of her baby set in the Philippine metropolis. Awarded a Special Jury Prize, Animation Film Category at the Vancouver International Film Festival (1995).

Riles(Railway) (15.00 min.)
Documentary by Rafael Luna & Richard de Guzman. Exposing a piteous reality for many Filipinos who live in the shabby huts along the Philippine railway transit.

Sa Maynila (In Manila) (6.20 min.)
by Mike Alcazaren, Josephine Atienza & Ricky Orellana is an impressionistic portrayal of Manila done in a different light through sounds. Honorable Mention in the Asean young Cinema Festival held in Tokyo, Japan (1992).

Laho (Vanish) (6.50 min.)
Short feature by Fruto Corre, a lyrical portrayal of a tragedy presented in a very light mood. Set in the after eruption scene of Mt. Pinatubo about two kids who both lost their families. 1st Prize, Short Feature Film Category, 11th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video (1997).

Kidlat (Lightning) (10:00 min.)
Short feature by Joey Agbayani. An experimental film about a journalist seeking up against a traditional crooked politician (TRAPO) and his private army. Won Best Short Feature Film, 13th at the Gawad Urian in 1989.

Kahon (Box) (11.06 min.)
Experimental film by Giselle Aceremo. The film criticises educational institutions in the country by using symbols. 3rd Prize, Experimental Film Category. 12th gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video (1999)

Bugtong (Mga Pamahiin Mula sa Basurahan) (Riddle:Superstitions from the Garbage) (6:00 min.)
by Rey Nicandro & Mario Mercado. Brings into view political issues clouding the country?s leadership.

An animation directed by Roxlee. Story of a man without a brain who went up in a mountain to catch a flying brain.

Impeng Negro (Impen, the Negro) (30:00 min.)
by Auraeious Solito. Based on Rogelio Sikat’s Short story where a half Pinoy boy is bullied by Ogor encouraging Impen to resort to violence. 1st Prize, Short Feature Film Category, 12th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video (1999)

Suring at ang Kuk-ok (Suring and the Kuk-ok) (15:00 min.)
by Auraeious Solito An ugly girl who wishes for nothing but to be appreciated dreams to transform herself into a Kuk-ok, a creature in the forest that could change its form into anything, freeing herself from her physical ugliness.

Hulot(Room) (20.00 min.)
by Ma. Theresa Tejero. An allegorical revelation of a woman who has been kept alone in her room. She frees herself from her confinement. 1st Prize and Best Regional Work, Short Feature Film Category, 14th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video (2001)

Chicken Soup 2 (Nerd World Cinema) (7.43)
Experimental film directed by R.A. Rivera. A comical film that opens parallel stories about two men who are rather out of their minds. One contemplates about committing suicide while the other thinks of considering whether to keep or throw his three-year old toothbrush.

Palugid (Margin) (15.00 min.)
A documentary directed by Paolo Villaluna. A mind liberating film about homosexuality as against social prejudices. Awarded 2nd Prize, Documentary Film Category, 14th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video (2001). Best Short Film, 24th Gawad Urian (2001).

Anino (Shadow)
directed by Raymond Red. Filipino film enshrined with a Golden Palm in Cannes Festival 2000. A down-and-out church photographer is daunted by an evil being and finds himself bewildered and wondering amidst the harsh realities of life under the “shadow”of the city. This film touches on the widening gap between the rich and poor, powerful and insignificant in our society.
