And the Oscar Goes to…
Foot in Mouth Dep’t.
In a couple of hours they’ll be giving away the Oscar statuettes for the 74th year.
Been doing this little thing, trying to predict the winners every year and might as well share my thoughts. (Like you have a choice right? hehe)
This year, I agree with this Salon article in every way except for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor. The article talks about how the Academy members vote according to politics and the mood of the times not exactly on merit of the movies. (Hello?! Titanic won remember?) While all the nominees are talented, we can’t dicount the influence of money and power being thrown at the whole process.
My Picks:
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Connelly
Best Supporting Actor: Ian Mckellen
Best Director: Ron Howard
Best Actor: Denzel Washington
Best Actress: Halle Berry
Best Picture: A Beautiful Mind
Connelly, McKellen, Howard, Washington and Berry will win it because the Academy would feel that the time is ripe for their Oscar. As much as I would like for Peter Jackson to win it for Lord of the Rings, he’ll be suffering from the Spielberg syndrome: the Academy will think his stuff are for kids. (And LOTR is too much of an epic and doesn’t “celebrate the triumph of the human spirit” like A Beautiful Mind. Pshaw!)
We’ll know in a few hours if I’d be eating toe sandwich.
