Mediavore: Seeing The Ring

I missed the screening of the Ring trilogy at this year’s Cinemanila filmfest. I was curious at the buzz surrounding the movie when it came out as well as hungry for anything other than Hollywood produced. Of course the possibility of getting it on DVD was there but where can you find a local store carrying titles like that? (Without charging an arm and a leg I mean…)
Imagine my surprise that someone out there decided to release the English-subtitled Ring last week in all the major malls. Greenbelt, Megamall, Galleria, G4. Access heaven!
I caught the movie with a couple of buds and the theater was packed!
On a weekday!
For a subtitled movie!
In a mall!
I don’t want add any more to what’s written about this movie (nothing I would say would matter at this point) except that it’s a great ride. It’s utterly creepy and I enjoyed being immersed in the story. It’s different from recent horror movies because it avoids the gore and instead focuses on the suspense…in truest meaning of the word.
With that said, I also enjoyed watching it in a movie theater full of people. I love hearing them react. I love hearing the nervous titter in the darkened theater. I’m used to watching these types of films at home with a few friends or in some small space with devoted film fans, but nothing, nothing comes close to that shared experience of watching a good movie in a theater full of people willing to be entertained for at least an hour and forty five minutes.
Go try to see the Ring at your favorite mall before the blasted Metro Manila Filmfest starts boring people and insulting their intelligence again. (Although I must admit I want to see Vic Sotto’s Lastikman because I can still vividly remember the black and white version being shown on TV…)
This Wednesday: My Big Fat Greek Wedding in theaters!
***
And yes, I’d still watch the Hollywood version of the Ring because I’m such a sucker for these things.

personally, masgusto ko yung japanese version because it doesn’t hold your hand and lead you step by step into the story. instead, it gives you space to get lost in your imagination. if you watch the japanese version first, matatakot ka. but after watching the american version, baka ma-influence nun yung pag-watch mo ng Ringu. paanorin mo pa rin. Ringu-japanese is classic.
