Weekend Reads

2 Gaimans, 2 Moores, an Ennis and a Niles
Gaiman’s take on the Marvel universe via 1602 # 2 continues to be interesting. I still don’t see how he’ll pull it off but I can’t wait for the pay-off in the end. Also picked up Gaiman’s Gods & Tulips, his collection of speeches and essays about writing comics and other in other media. Good stuff. I picked up a few pointers for, you know, writing that comic book. ;)
Alan Moore’s long-delayed final installment to the 2nd volume of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen arrived in the stores. I was a bit disappointed with how he finished a very interesting series (but he tied up the loose ends nonetheless). Without spoiling anything to anyone reading this series, it just felt rushed.
Also picked up a collection of stories Moore did for DC. It’s quite a treat to read these early stories as it was done with frequent collaborators such as Dave Gibbons and Kevin O’Neill. You can see how they’ve grown in their craft. I love the Green Lantern Corps stories which are a mixture of sci-fi and horror. This is a must have for Moore fans.
My weekly dose of Garth Ennis’ Preacher brought me number 7 in a series of 9 trade paperbacks. The suspense is killing me. It’s a pleasant surprise to be reading a book I kept seeing but putting off reading.
Dial M for Monster is, strictly speaking, not a comic book but a collection of stories featuring Cal McDonald, Steve Niles’ gumshoe who keep running into the supernatural. Haven’t gotten into it yet but I picked it up because I liked Niles and Ben Templesmith’s 30 Days of Night (premise: vampires find out about a place in Alaska which doesn’t see the sun for 30 consecutive days).
