Who Watches the Watchmen?
President GMA’s new campaign to make cops and police try out ‘wholesome’ fun is just plain - dare I say it? - surreal.
Cops always complain about getting low salaries yet they blow it (ahem) on girlie bars. Politicians blame Chinese telenovelas as eroding our values yet would have a stable of GROs given out as party favors whenever the occasion calls for it. Those who are in the position to protect women from exploitation are exploiting them in their “off hours” every chance they get.
It’s good President Gloria finally recognizes the problem but isn’t it just plain sad our leaders need to be reminded that they should be setting a good example? Aren’t authority figures, to be effective, supposed to operate from a moral high ground in the first place? I know we shouldn’t be looking for perfect individuals to lead us but it would be nice to know if they’re at least trying their best.
Sure not all policemen are incompetent, beer bellied, whore-mongering individuals but this doesn’t really improve their image doesn’t it? Al-Ghozi anyone?
No wonder magic realism as a literary style never really took off in the Philippines. Truth is stranger than fiction in these parts.
