I Know You Like It Too
This appeared on Ms. Jo-Ann Maglipon’s column a week before the Kris and Joey Show blew up. Of course, I submit to superior writers for expressing my sentiments in a more skillful and authoritative manner. I just remembered it now upon reading other people’s reaction to our country’s own little telenovela.
Why is it that all these people who like to appear intelligent or dedicated or intense treat show biz like it were something they shouldn’t be caught liking? I see them put on a tolerant smile, like they were simply indulging you, while making a big show of their focus remaining on the nation’s problems.
I could grant that, sure. I do have friends who know nothing about show biz and are sincerely content with their state of ignorance. But there are types who make a big show of not being interested, yet always segue to: What’s the tsismis?
And, mind, they cock their ears to hear.
Oh please, spare me.
Bread and circuses right? Gabriel Garcia Marquez would be hard pressed to come up with anything to top the Philippines. Magic realism? Feh. Try Philippine reality. Truth is stranger than fiction in these parts.
