‘Wassup Friendsters!’
Heh. You gotta love that. That’s how Syke greeted the crowd during his set. Trixy and I checked out Peace ‘N Motion, a hip-hop festival over at Enterprise Center. (Thanks for the tip Shiloah!)
I totally enjoyed Syke’s perfomance. Apparently, he’s been around for some time and has already released an album. Some of the people in the crowd were rhyming along with him. If hip-hop was borne out of the African-American experience, Syke managed to appropriate it for the Pinoy. He is Speech to Andrew E’s Biz Marky. The styles are different. While Andrew E and his Donggalo crew go for novelty and shock, I find Syke’s approach much wittier albeit both use humor effectively.
Storm Robitzky and Kane Wung Libanus wowed the crowd with their perfomances. As usual, there were some airhead hecklers before Robitzky’s performance but they soon shut up once he got going. His piece ‘Solo For Two‘ was a combination of dance, video and theater. Totally awesome! I was partial to the part where he danced to different Nokia ringtones. (You had to be there…)

And then he came back with Libanus to do ‘Men At Work.’ The piece is a statement of the drudgery of a workaday world, how we mechanically go through our daily routines, how buzzers tell us when to start and stop work. (Hey wait a minute - French guy…pretending to be shovelling…have them put on white make-up and oh my God! they’re MIMES!) But seriously, my take away from that piece was that we can only be happy if we’re free stylin’. ;)
We saw Artstrong, another individual with awesome vocals, (formerly (?) of Third World Project) in the area with his guitar. We had to leave before he got on stage though. That would’ve been good.
Just an aside: I saw 2 Michael Jordan jerseys (One Bulls, one Wizard), an Iverson, a Kobe Bryant, a handful of trucker caps and a dozen baseball caps. Di talaga bagay. I wonder how long before we can appropriate the hip-hop clothing? (That Francis M ethnic thing was a bit too much, IMHO). When will we have something truly ‘for us, by us?’ Fo’ Shitzzel.
