Equalizing
From MLQIII’s most recent column (emphasis mine):
“Our middle class, which more often than not, has worked for, and not inherited, what it has, and which has surmounted enough of the difficulties to appreciate that some things are possible, but too much remains difficult to achieve, is the bulwark of a modern nation. But it has been caught between the immovable, inflexible rock of corrupt governance and the hard place in which dwells the poor who are regularly used and abused by those who govern, as a foil against any reformist pressure. The doctor or engineer, middle-level executive or small-scale entrepreneur only wants fewer laws, safer streets, more fairly applied (and spent) taxes, a more predictable environment in which permits and documents required by law are issued with efficiency and not because of bribes. They want an economy in which owning a home is not only affordable, but possible, and schools that produce graduates who are competitive and who can find jobs.”
