Am I the only one who doesn’t get American Idol? Sure William Hung was a hoot but hey I don’t think he’ll be relevant after 2 years. I mean great if he got a record deal but I’m definitely not buying his album. Si Andrew E. na lang.

So what’s the attraction? Watching amateurs, albeit talented (at least in the finals) amateurs singing covers? Watching their egos get shattered by Simon Cowell’s one-liners, perhaps sending some of them into therapy for years? Wha?

If the attraction is similar to the morbid appeal of looking at a car crashes, maybe they should do a tv series on writing workshops instead. Or a local version of Donald Trump’s the Apprentice. Who wants to see Manny Pangilinan or Eugenio Lopez III or Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala II or John Gokongwei tell fresh college grads: “Sisante ka!” on primetime TV?

Maybe if (when?) FPJ becomes President they can do a (sur)reality TV where he fires cabinet members each week. Malamang mga artista at gustong maging artista ang nasa kabinete ni Da King. Sana may SMS poll din para naman enjoy ang taong bayan. Ayan, pwede na nilang i-tax ng i-tax ang texting. Tapos, pag wala ng natira sa kabinete…

PS The only interesting bit for me was how they’re doing their SMS poll. I get a kick how Ryan Seechest…Seacrease…Crest Toothpaste — that host — struggle to explain how viewers can participate in the poll. I wonder how much SMS traffic they get from that.
