Now What?
First Will Eisner passes away.
Now, I just learned Dave Barry has written his last daily column for the Miami Herald. Bummer. I do hope he’s not leaving just because people think he used to be funnier. I have to disagree. (I’d like to see his critics try to write a humour column everyday. It’s hard. I tried my Barry pastiche here. It took me days writing it and IMHO, far from perfect.)
Maybe he just wants to concentrate on the Rock Bottom Remainders, a band with fellow authors, Stephen King, Ridley Pearson, Scott Turow, Amy Tan, James McBride, James “Five People You’ll Meet With Morrie” Albom, Roy Blount, Jr., Matt Groening, Kathi Kamen Goldmark and Greg Iles.

Ca t? hehehe
We have to admit the fact that many of our Filipino readers
prefer the “slapstick” type of humor even in the blogging world that Dave Barry’s style of writing isn’t acceptable yet.
For one, I do not judge them to be mababaw. They just want to be entertained.
It is not that easy to inject humour to serious topics. Either readers do not take you seriously or dismiss you as
an intellectual wannabe. Only people in the samewavelength appreciate the seriousness of the message you want to bring across.
Some readers want them written “straight from the shoulder”.
Paano kung may shoulder pad pang suot ? ehek.

What is good in the US of A is that humorists/cartoonists earn so much because of the syndications of their works by as many as 100 newspapers that they can afford to retire early. One such humorist/cartoonist that I admire was the author of Calvin and Hobbs. I think he retired at the age of 30’s.
Our cartoonists never had that good opportunity that they die with recognition but not so much in financial rewards.
Up to now, the heirs of the cartoonist of Peanuts wallow in millions of dollars as royalties.
kainggit.

Well Cat, I guess it really depends on the audience you’re writing to and the writing voice which you’re trying to cultivate as your own. Dave Barry has that wacky way of writing his column but still manages to drive the point home. I’ll miss those.
Sayang nga mga kartunista natin sa pinas. PM Junior though encounter success with Pugad Baboy could never retire on its royalties. different markets I guess. Deng Coy Miel of ikabod (kasama ata ni batjay sa singapore) nakakamiss din.
Oh and kainis nga si Bill Waterson and Gary Larson. Calvin and Hobbes and the Far Side spoiled me. Some of the Sunday cartoons now have yet to approach their level of wit and humor. Kahit nabasa ko na yung old strips nila nakakatawa pa rin.

Its good to know i wasn’t the only one who was saddened about Dave Barry’s decision to stop making people, like myself laugh, every Sunday morning over a cup of coffee :) Actually many people enjoyed his style of writing, including Steve Martin, who by the way wrote a one page article on the same day Barry’s last column came out (not as funny though) . I will miss him too :( and his stories about his 2 yr old daughter.

lucky for me, when i told my friends about book preference, they gave me a copy of Dave Barry’s, a book of collections of Calvin and Hobbs’s strips and now Dilbert’s.
