RadYo! Mukha Mo Friday
Nostalgia can be dangerous. And also profitable. Some marketing geniuses are “reimagining” - Hollywood’s current buzzword for recycling old materials - Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes gang. See picture and video. (via MeFi) Bugs isn’t just the smart-mouth rabbit with a penchant for cross-dressing anymore - he’s to be known as Buzz Bunny and he’s got laser eyes and martials arts training! Oy!
Call me old-fashioned and corny but that’s just a bankrupt choice. Instead of taking the risk of doing something smart, funny and new like what Genndy Tartakovksy did with Dexter’s Lab and Samurai Jack and Craig McCracken in the Powerpuff Girls, Warner Brothers had to dilute any remaining goodwill we have for the Looney Tunes and repackage them into manic cartoon of cartoons. Didn’t they learn anything from the absolutely horrible Baby Looney Tunes? The nervous energy, signifying nothing of Tiny Toons?
With the resurrection of GI Joe, the Transformers, G-Force, Thundercats and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, I guess it was just a matter of time before they came around to Bugs Bunny. But I dare them to come up with any thing close to genius as the “What’s Opera, Doc?” episode. Unless of course they remake Elmer Fudd as a stuttering MC/DJ a la 50 Cent (”Am got you and the duck / right down my glock / so be vewy, vewy quiet / you cwazy wabbit”).
Some things are better remember as being in the past and are not subject to remakes, reimaginings or cover versions. They belong to a particular time and place. Like these songs: My high school dance playlist. How’s that for a segue?
1. A-Ha - Take On Me
2. The B-52s - Rock Lobster
3. China Crisis - Wishful Thinking
4. Depeche Mode - Just Can’t Get Enough
5. Flock of Seagulls - The More Your Live, The More You Love
6. The Go Go’s - Head Over Heels
7. Icicle Works - Whisper to a Scream
8. Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
9. Modern English - Melt With You
10. New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
11. OMD - If You Leave
12. Pixies - Here Comes Your Man

With two kids, I watch a lot of cartoons, including the Looney Tunes classics.
Warner Bros. should stick to creating original animation.
OT: You know, my wife and I should have been in Orlando today; hindi lang natuloy. Oh well.
