On[e] Night-Stand
As mentioned in The Spy in the Sandwich’s post, here are some of the stuff sitting on the nightstand. I couldn’t resist a bargain. Hardbound books for 1-2 USD? And I didn’t have to lug them across the Pacific too.
I still want to pick up Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore and Neal Stephenson’s The System of the World but not until I finish that stack on my nightstand. Thanks to these people’s passion for Murakami-san, I was able to add a new ingredient to my usual Horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy diet. If only to be able to read Murakami in Japanese, I’d learn the language.
After investing time being lost in the mini-phonebook heft of Cryptonomicon, Quicksilver, and The Confusion, there’s no way I can continue living (o ‘ha! dramah) without reading Stephenson’s 3rd book of the Baroque Cycle. I need to know how it ends. Besides, that’s the least I can do for a man who would find ways to include Pinoys and the Philippines in his novels. He actually made Math and Science fun for me, made me wish I’d paid more attention to it in school. I’d recommend his books to Isagani Cruz.
And still to come: J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in July and Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys in September. Way too many books to read. Less Vin Diesel, more reading.

While on the subject of books, Bulletproof Vest just passed this small quiz to me:
You’re stuck inside Fahrenheit 451, which book do you want to be?
Tough one. Uhm. 1984 by Orwell. For obvious comparisons?
Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?
Yes. From a book you mean? Snow Queen from CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia, Galadriel from LOTR, and Kitiara from Dragonlance. Do you detect a pattern here?
The last book you’ve bought is:
All Tomorrow’s Parties by William Gibson.
The last book you’ve read:
Broken Music by Sting.
What are you currently reading?
Living To Tell The Tale by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I seem to be in a non-fiction streak these past months.
Five books you would take to a deserted island:
Ulysses by Joyce. And lots of paper for notes and other writings. :)
Who will you pass this quiz to?
Let see: Jesse, Budj, Jessel, Gigi, Banzai Cat, and to the folks at Elephant Still Missing. I know for sure they love books more than I do.

I still have way too many books left unread to buy any more, but there are too many good titles to pass up.

Eek! Which books on the nightstand? I have two piles– one on my left and right. Currently, I have 500 books unread in my backlog. *gulp*
Seriously, Stephenson is cool for the same reason as yours. (Yay Intramuros!) As for Murakami, I tried out his ‘Wild Sheep Chase’ but I want to read it again. Cool like jazz, I swear, but most of it went over my head.
