The fact that no one understands you doesn't make you an artist.

“Connect The Dots…Connect The Goddamn Dots!”

…which are lyrics from the Ministry song TV II, a nod to a friend who introduced me to the joys and the noise of heavy/death/speed metal. Ironically, I’m tipping my hat today because he just got promoted at his job. Congrats, Taps! Good show, old chap.

So anyway, I’m blanking the past few days so this theme is a bit forced. I just remembered those profound lyrics from Ministry and thought to just go with it.

I realized how one group can spawn into yet more bands with distinct sounds. I’m sure there are more local bands sharing the same lineage in terms of band-mates, managers, producers and what-have-yous. A bit incestuous isn’t it? Can you tell how each band’s related to each other?

  1. Lemme try…

I know that in the first selection, the grandfather is Eraserheads, with Marc Abaya(?) doing his thing in Sandwhich (and later Kwjan?). The Mongols is Ely Buendia’s baby. As for Cambio… not sure.

Second category: grandfather is Hungry Young Poets, splitting into two with Barbie Almabis in Barbie’s Cradle and that other guy in Mojofly. Mojofly’s first vocalist was Kitchie Nadal and then she went solo.

Third category: Rivermaya had Bamboo first as its lead vocalist and then he upped and left for the US, they had Rico Blanco. Then Bamboo came back and formed his own band…

Fourth category: I don’t know about this one. However, I think you can add Advent Call to the list because Karl Roy was the vocalist there before going on to P.O.T.

    Whew!

  2. Keyser Soze

    Incestuous indeed!

PS I believe Razorback’s Kevin Roy is Karl’s brother.

  3. eraserheads’ raymund spun off sandwich as a project band. mongol’s is ely’s new band (a reference to erasers and pencils). cambio is raymund, marcus. and buddy sans ely (+ female vocalist from fatal posporos. :))

  4. Cambio, si Kris saka si Ebe Dancel. :)

Patay na, andyan na si Kitchie! Haha. :P

  5. E kung si Ebe Dancel then you have to include Sugarfree! :-)

  6. “Mr. DJ can I make a request? Pwede ba yung…..”

    …OPM One-Hit Wonders?

or the longest time, I’m trying to come up with a top-10 and the first song I thought of is Boy (by Timmy Cruz) and after that, I’m stuck because all the while I’m thinking, ‘How the heck did that become a hit?’ Maybe you’ll have better luck than yours truly.

    Regards,

  7. Yup Banzai, you got most of it correct. As Keyser Soze mentioned, Karl of P.O.T. and is Razorback vocalist’s Kevin Roy’s bro. Razorback and Wolfgang used to perform together as Flaming Hemorrhoids. Speaking of Flaming, Razorback has a song called Pepe the Hepe about Pepe Smith. Smith of course sometimes play with Flaming Katols which included Marcus Adoro of the E-heads.

As Emer said, Cambio is the remaining members of the E-heads plus Kris Dancel, formerly of Fatal Posporos minus Buendia who put together the Mongols. The prolific Raimund Marasigan also has his Squid 9 project which last I heard is more techno/electronic music.

Oh yeah…and Color It Red’s Cooky Chua was doing back-up vocals on that P.O.T. song.

John, that would be a challenge. Now that you’ve mentioned it, I do wonder why Boy was a hit for Timmy Cruz. Ah well. I’ll see if I can put it together thanks for the idea. Should be fun.
