No, Not Fun

Yeesh. Via BoingBoing:

A 4-year-old boy on a family vacation died Monday afternoon after he passed out on a Disney World ride at Epcot.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. on the Mission: SPACE ride, according to Disney officials. The ride spins passengers on a multi-armed centrifuge to simulate a launch into space. It exerts more than twice the normal force of gravity on occupants. (rest of the news story)

We’ve tried this ride when we visited Epcot Center and it was pretty intense. It had a video where Gary Sinise as the Mission Commander will brief you on your training mission. You’ll be then strapped into a capsule for the simulated space ride. Unlike a roller coaster where you’ll see every twist and turn in front of you, Mission: Space works on your body and your senses. Sure you have the video screen in front of you but what makes it a theme park ride is that you’ll feel the G-forces working on you like during the rocket launch or during the landing. I’m not sure how close it gets to the actual thing - after all, contrary to popular belief, I have never been aboard a spacecraft - but it is pretty intense. I had to sit down on one of the benches outside the ride after the whole thing. They do have plenty of warnings that if you have a sensitive condition like a heart problem or prone to motion sickness or even claustrophobia to sit this one out.

  1. Ano yun idedemanda yung Disney? Pero may warning naman di ba?

  2. Nyah!! Wordpress!! :)

Looks much nicer than the last one, Mark!

kawawa naman ano? hindi ko pa nasubukan tong ride - i’m so scared of heights, dumbo ride nga lang tumitili na ako.

I went on that exact same ride a few months ago and it almost ruined my day. Blame it on my age, but I don’t see how that ride belongs in a children’s theme park.

  5. Gelay, baka hindi raw. Weird nga eh… ni hindi pwede i-investigate ng state inspectors ang rides. Malaki nga naman ang naibibigay ng Disney and other theme parks in terms of tourists sa state.

Hi Gerry! Thanks. Sinubukan ko tong Wordpress ever since I reactivate my blog late last year. Ngayon ko lang kasi nakita yung ganitong layout kaya mas mukhang malinis. :)

Pen, kaya din ako napasubo kasi di mo kasi akalain ganun siya. Unassuming. Di naman siya mataas. All you see is a small box with no windows where four people will sit. Yun pala centrifuge. Yikes.

Pau, we had an eight year old with us and she was pretty much done after that ride - as were most of the adults with us. Buti na lang hinuli namin yun. Kinain na lang namin yung hilo namin sa Chinese resto sa Epcot. :)
