Neil Gaiman, Rockstar Writer

Updates: More Gaiman fandom at Flickr, links at Babbling Point. If you want to listen to Neil Gaiman at Music Museum: mp3s from the Writer’s Forum. (thanks Dré !)

“Totally missed the Gaiman activities, so I shall admire him from afar. I dont feel so bad though kasi I’m sure ang daming posers dun! Grabe, been hearing about people who think comics are geeky are suddenly the biggest Gaiman fans! grrrr They also probably think they look like Death. Back in my college days I encountered E*** V***** (now a teleserye iconic kontrabida) and she insisted that she was the personification of Death. Asus!”

Ah my snarky, snarky friends. I promised not to put up his/her name so I won’t.

I am so totally envious of folks who’ve finally met Mr. G. during his visit to Manila. Reading up on his journal, it seems like he’s having fun, faulty printers notwithstanding. I can understand why one would be excited meeting him or just seeing him in person. First, you just want to say thank you to this talented guy who has consistently brought you amazing tales - whether it’s in comics, novels, short stories, movies, album sleeves, or even a 100-word XMas card. Second, from what I’ve read he’s a genuinely nice person. At least to his fans. I’ve met some writers who haven’t even come close to Gaiman’s stature who’d rather be in a cave and not deal with people. And yet they’ll go on a platform and say ‘Buy my book!’. Bleh. Couldn’t you at least fake a smile or something? You know what they say, the risk of meeting your heroes is that they may turn up to be heels. Fortunately, Mr. G’s not one of those writers.

To top it all off, there were 3,000 people who showed up to Mr. Gaiman’s signing who gamely sat and signed til 1 am in the morning. I’d rather see that kind of hullaballoo (or as Luis said “gibbering hero-worship or the equally annoying flipside: needless snotty impertinence”) over a writer than a Korean pop group with perfectly manicured hair.

Here’s a transcript of the Writer’s Forum from Stalking Manila.

More pictures and updates on Gaiman’s Manila tour via Anansi Girl, Stellar, Banzai Cat, and Azrael.

Me, I’m just waiting on eBay for the signed stuff to start showing up.
