Top 500 Universities in the World

According to the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, the top 5 universities in the world are:
1. Harvard University (Americas)
2. University Cambridge (Europe)
3. Stanford Univeristy (Americas)
4. University California – Berkeley (Americas)
5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (Americas)
I think it’s telling that not one Philippine university was mentioned. Not UP, not Ateneo, and not DLSU. Either they didn’t make the cut of the 500 or they didn’t even bother including it in their study which is to “find out the gap between Chinese universities and world-class universities, particularly in terms of academic or research performance.”

well, during my time. hongkong sent their students down here to take advantage of both cost and quality.
and i can tell you that credits in our top three are accepted in the ivy league schools in the U.S.

Hi James! No doubt individual efforts from the graduates of the Philippine’s top schools can get in the ivy league schools. The study by the Chinese university shows as institutions of higher learning, the Philippines still lags behind in terms of graduate research output. When we will we have our Nobel prizes for Chemistry, Physics, etc?
I know the brain drain isn’t helping for sure but our universities must be encouraged to keep the brightest minds to continue their graduate work there not just attract and develop world-class undergrads. Instead of political muck-raking and stuffing themselves with their pork-barrel funds to further their careers, why don’t the people in power nurture the development of these universities instead?

well, on another ranking _ top 3000 universities across the world, dated january 2007, UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES DILIMAN got 1226th place,DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY MANILA got 1798th, and ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY got 2240th spot..
i was actually searching for University of Santo Tomas :D
