Katrina, the State of Louisiana and the Pinoys

Watching the news about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is just heartbreaking. Aside from the massive loss of life and property, order seems to have broken down in the areas where help is taking too long to reach it.

I’ve always wanted to go to New Orleans since it’s long been a subject of stories and song. What more, the first Filipino community in the United States was established near New Orleans at Saint Malo in 1763. The first settlers were called Manilamen, Filipinos who jumped ship to escape Spanish rule. Supposedly, some Cajun food owes its influence to the confluence of cultures in the Louisiana bayou, among them Pinoys. St. Malo, however was also destroyed by a hurricane in 1915.

Meanwhile, at home, another storm is brewing.

Our prayers go to the families affected by Hurricane Katrina.
