“A person starts to live when he can live outside himself.” - Albert Einstein
Maybe it was the new year which prompted me into backing up my old data. I have copies of this site as well as most of the sites I’ve worked on it the past. I have emails dating back as 1997. If you’ve been backing up your digital life, you’ll know that CDs aren’t exactly very durable. It was however, better than the alternative back then - zip drives. Anyone who have heard the fearsome click-of-death would know how fragile data could be. Then again, if you treat it right digital can be forever.
I was backing up my old CDs and just as a lark, I tried retrieving my email archives. Thunderbird has great tools for these. The only ones I wasn’t able to get were from the old Lotus Mail archive. Haven’t that one out yet. Anyway, I read through emails from people who have come and gone from my life and I can still remember the context of when it was written. Anyone who says emails does not have the same feel as handwritten letter doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Some these people stayed long enough to be friends. Others, well ….good riddance.
I backed-up the files along with gigabytes of detritus of my old life. I crammed them in shiny DVRs, tucked in a binder and kept in a shelf. If I need an old reference file for a project or a touchstone to my relationships, I know which genie resides in which bottle.

Here are a couple of people who I’m glad I’ve met and stayed around as friends. They actually make a living out of writing. Check them out:
* Isa’s Ba-Log
* Galatea
* The Coven
* a hundred words a day…
