Popcorny Tally
Testing out this cool plug-in.
This is something I’ve been thinking of doing. I’ve included movies I’ve seen in theaters as well as my Netflix list from the first half of the year. Subsequent posts won’t be as long, I’d imagine.
Ratings Guide
8 to 10 Stars: movies which you should see in theaters (great/engaging story, special effects made for the theater, worth the trip to the cinema)
5 to 7 Stars: movies which can be seen on DVD/video in the comfort of your home (it’s entertaining enough, more people can watch, rewind to bits which you didn’t get, you won’t miss out on the special effects on a decent TV)
1 to 4 Stars: movies on the lower end of the scale are a total waste of time (trust me on this) while 3 or 4 stars movies are those you’d watch at a risk of throwing a brick through your TV (not bad enough to skip — probably bored one afternoon and you just have to watch a movie — but these might not meet your expectations or live up to its trailer/adverts/hype)
See? I’m an equal opportunity movie-basher. :)

The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008)

Being a fan of the TV series, I wanted to believe — that creator Chris Carter, writer Frank Spotnitz, actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson can capture lightning in a bottle again for the 2nd big screen outing of Mulder and Scully. On one hand, it harkens back to the monster-of-the-week episodes of the series. Unfortunately, it’s lacks the ingredients which made some of those episodes great. Wait for it on DVD.

Putting aside Heath Ledger’s now legendary pitch-perfect performance as the Batman’s nemesis the Joker, Christopher Nolan has put together a great looking movie and elicited fine performances from his cast. Nolan also manages to tell a story for the movies nevermind its comic book origins. Best viewed large, on IMAX.

I was aware of Meryl Streep as a fantastic actress but seeing her sing & act just made me admire her more as an artist. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of Pierce Brosnan. His singing leaves much to be desired. Fun movie if only for the ABBA songs (which was the soundtrack of my childhood as it was played constantly) and the gorgeous location shoots in Greece. Would make for great repeated DVD viewings.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
2008-07-12 04:55
Being a big fan of Mike Mignola’s creation, Hellboy 2 was definitely a treat for me. It was great seeing the characters on the screen again despite the threat of a sequel being abandoned when the first movie didn’t exactly break records. Guillermo del Toro is given much more freedom to pursue his vision this time around and it results in a lighter, entertaining and definitely eye-popping gorgeous popcorn movie. Jim Henson would definitely approve of del Toro’s creations. Oh and it takes some talent to make Barry Manilow’s I Can’t Smile Without You sound cool.

Some of the text colors make your text hard to read (like in this comment page). Still, fantastic blog design, man.

Thanks. I got the theme from Wordpress.net. It’s Derek Punsalan’s Foliage theme. He’s a designer of Pinoy descent in Seattle. It needed some tweaking here and there but I like its clean look. Glad you liked it too. :)
