Cory: Nation Builder
That’s according to Time Magazines’ 60 Years of Asian Heroes. The “Simple Housewife” made it to the list which counts Gandhi, Nehru, Lee Kuan Yew and Deng Xiaoping in its roster. 20 years since assuming the presidency, Aquino’s legacy seems to be that of bringing the country into democracy — however messy it may seem.
Personally I think her energies and the goodwill she commanded then might have had been better used elsewhere instead of being consumed by pursuing the architects of Martial Law. 20 years later, some of those she tried to persecute are still in power or are slowly going back into power. The PCGG are under fire and the victims of the dictatorship still hasn’t seen a centavo of compensation for damages. Meanwhile, Imelda is selling fancy jewelry.
Still, staving-off putsch from the spoiled military is not some small feat. She lasted her term and more importantly started to undo Marcos’ damage to the country’s democracy. 20 years of dictatorship isn’t simply undo. Much of the work must come from the generation of Filipinos who will come after as well as to her successors to make sure cronyism and civilian rule over the military remains in place.
Just as a goof, I’ve scanned (badly it seems) a panel from a comic book called Y: The Last Man. To put in context, the world is struck by an unknown virus killing all men. The US’ is now led by the Secretary of Agriculture as dictated by the order of succession:

Cory’s legacy seem to be emerging. I wonder what Macapagal-Arroyo’s will be 20 years hence?
