Remember 1986
I was just thinking about Feb ‘86 when an article on the BBC website caught my attention. It was about a UN rep talking about the wave of political killings in the Philippines and how the military are in “total denial.”
Anyone who’s been following Philippine politics, it’s not unusual that the government is in total denial about everything. However, what’s different about that article is that UN envoy was saying the military was in total denial. Back in Ferdinand Marcos’ time, the bogeyman of the Opposition was the military. High profile oppositionists were thrown in jail while others simply disappeared. Seems like old times the old times are back. In time for election season too.
And coincidentally, while channel surfing I saw this MTV reality show “I’m from Rolling Stone” and saw one of the contestants who I thought should get the job - Krish. Turns she’s Pinay and from the Bay Area. While looking up information of her, I chanced upon the blog FOBBDeep. From it I learned there was a Stop the Killing Benefit Show last Saturday with a few more information about the situation of the political killings in the Philippines:
Did you know that 825+ people have been killed in the Philippines since 2001? Regular people…students, teachers, lawyers, workers, journalists, clergy, human rights workers, etc. Witnesses have pointed to elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in carrying out these killings. Yet not one person has been tried or convicted for any of these deaths. President Arroyo’s government has done nothing to stop to these atrocities.
That’s 825+ too many. So instead of “Remember, remember the 5th of November” how about “Be wary, be wary the 24th of February?” to the leaders and future leaders of the Philippines?
Be wary, be wary the 24th of February
when the people, the country does plot.
I see no reason why people power
Should ever be forgot…
