I was aware of Meryl Streep as a fantastic actress but seeing her sing & act just made me admire her more as an artist. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of Pierce Brosnan. His singing leaves much to be desired. Fun movie if only for the ABBA songs (which was the soundtrack of my childhood as it was played constantly) and the gorgeous location shoots in Greece. Would make for great repeated DVD viewings.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)

Being a big fan of Mike Mignola’s creation, Hellboy 2 was definitely a treat for me. It was great seeing the characters on the screen again despite the threat of a sequel being abandoned when the first movie didn’t exactly break records. Guillermo del Toro is given much more freedom to pursue his vision this time around and it results in a lighter, entertaining and definitely eye-popping gorgeous popcorn movie. Jim Henson would definitely approve of del Toro’s creations. Oh and it takes some talent to make Barry Manilow’s I Can’t Smile Without You sound cool.

While it’s definitely another entertaining fare from the folks at Pixar, Wall-E is not the best of the lot as some reviews would like to say (I think that honor still belongs to Finding Nemo). While the graphics are gorgeous and the characters are loveable, the story and the plot were not as gracefully executed. Still nobody does a CG movie better than Pixar so it’s worth the trip to the theater.

If there’s anything I’d like for this movie to do, it is to introduce director Timur Bekmambetov to a huge audience. Timur directed Nightwatch and Daywatch, two enjoyable sci-fi movies from Russia which is better than most Hollywood movies out there. Aside from bringing in his unique eye for detail and insane car stunts, Timur actually improved upon Mark Millar and JG Jones’ story from the graphic novel. Morgan Freeman seems to enjoy riffing on his usual on-screen image and of course Angelina Jolie is sizzling hot! Definitely watch it on the big screen for the insane stunts.
