Green Lantern Corps #14

I have never been a fan of Green Lantern. Regardless if it’s Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner or Kyle Rayner. To me he’s a boring character. The best Superman stories usually touch on alienation and Batman’s would explore the dark corners humanity and the redemption from it. Green Lanterns tends to be jingoistic — a galactic cop who see himself as the savior of the whole universe despite belonging to an eclectic group which shares his powers.

That said, I’m finding the current Sinestro Corps storyline a compelling read. The concept is that, long-time Green Lantern enemy Sinestro assembles his own yellow-ringed group which he sets against the Green Lantern Corps. Bloodshed ensues. Spoilers after the jump.

In the first three parts of the story, Sinestro manages to take the Lanterns by surprise. The conceit being the color yellow can overpower a novice Green Lantern. And what the Sinestro Corps can’t defeat by sheer force, the yellow ring will take them out. With the help of various allies like the Anti-Monitor (he of Crisis on Infinite Earths fame) and Cyborg Superman, Sinestro ensures a lot of vacancies at the Green Lantern Corps. Sinestro even manages to transform Kyle Rayner into the new Parallax. Parallax used to possess Hal Jordan which caused him to murder a lot of his former teammates.

GLC#14, opens with Sinestro returning to his homeworld and manipulating events to keep the current Green Lantern occupied. Sinestro used to rule his world and that caused him to be stripped of his ring and his responsibilities and into exile. We also follow two injured Lanterns limping to Mogo, the planet sized Lantern only to find itself under attack.

And what also makes the Sinestro Corps storyline interesting is that it touches on an old Alan Moore story. In “Tygers” Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual No.2, Abin Sur was shown a future which the Green Lantern Corps would fall because of the concerted efforts of its enemies. Sure enough, some of its predictions are coming to pass during the Sinestro Corps.
