Being a fan of the TV series, I wanted to believe — that creator Chris Carter, writer Frank Spotnitz, actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson can capture lightning in a bottle again for the 2nd big screen outing of Mulder and Scully. On one hand, it harkens back to the monster-of-the-week episodes of the series. Unfortunately, it’s lacks the ingredients which made some of those episodes great. Wait for it on DVD.

Putting aside Heath Ledger’s now legendary pitch-perfect performance as the Batman’s nemesis the Joker, Christopher Nolan has put together a great looking movie and elicited fine performances from his cast. Nolan also manages to tell a story for the movies nevermind its comic book origins. Best viewed large, on IMAX.

I was aware of Meryl Streep as a fantastic actress but seeing her sing & act just made me admire her more as an artist. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of Pierce Brosnan. His singing leaves much to be desired. Fun movie if only for the ABBA songs (which was the soundtrack of my childhood as it was played constantly) and the gorgeous location shoots in Greece. Would make for great repeated DVD viewings.

Being a big fan of Mike Mignola’s creation, Hellboy 2 was definitely a treat for me. It was great seeing the characters on the screen again despite the threat of a sequel being abandoned when the first movie didn’t exactly break records. Guillermo del Toro is given much more freedom to pursue his vision this time around and it results in a lighter, entertaining and definitely eye-popping gorgeous popcorn movie. Jim Henson would definitely approve of del Toro’s creations. Oh and it takes some talent to make Barry Manilow’s I Can’t Smile Without You sound cool.
