A Pinoy Blog About Nothing

Turning 7

Didn’t realize that I’ve passed a milestone recently: it’s been 7 years since I’ve started blogging in September 9 back in 2000. Then I immediately realized I’ve been blogging longer than I’ve been married. And then also that if this blog is a kid, he/she’d be in first grade. This placed me in a introspective mood, hence:

You know you’ve been blogging to long if…

1. You remember page views as a metric used by corporate/business websites.

2. You remember Jakob Nielsen’s lesson on banner ads and how readers ignore them.

3. Your Facebook friends are mostly “met randomly, read/found/clicked on his blog.”

4. You know Ev not from Twitter but from Pyra Labs.

5. You remember people blogging about what genuinely interests them.

6. You’ve been self-conscious posting personal posts lately.

7. You’ve found out that lists are handy if you’re too lazy to post anything substantial.

  1. People do blog about what genuinely interests them…

  2. Hey David.

In the early days of blogging, it was more the norm than the exception that people post about what they really care about. Not necessarily these days — some bloggers get into blogging to chase high yield ad words and to earn page rank. Whatever rocks their boat — I mean I understand money is a great motivator.

There’s still quite a few blogs out there being maintained as a form of self-expression.

  3. 7 years. Wow. That was like pre-9/11 and pre-internet bubble burst. I was probably mostly playing foosball during breaks at a brick-and-mortar store turned web retail outfit before it eventually tanked. Back then, buzz was about “third generation sites” (yeah, so why call Web 2.0, Web 2.0? heh.).

That’s a long time blogging, Mark. Oh and if it’s 7, wouldn’t that be 2nd grade?

  4. pen

your blog’s exactly one year older than mine, awww LOL
    i agree with 6 and 7.

    i think i’ll add:

    - you went from blogger to movable type or greymatter before settling in wordpress
    - for most girls: you’ve used diaryland or pitas or diary-x (RIP)

  5. Seven years na ba? I remember it was you who introduced me to blogging through Blogger. Well, after seven years, I’m still blogging through Blogger. Hehehehehe!

  6. @daniel: feels like a long time blogging too. Sometimes I’m thinking of just chucking it. I think with what you’ve seen and been through you know how I feel about buzzwords, enh?

Second grade? Wow. Then again kids start early in school these days. Most of us were seven years old back in first grade.

@pen: oh hai! hehe yeah evolution was blogger -> greymatter/movabletype -> wordpress. I didn’t get into livejournal since I didn’t have an invite back then. I thought MT would be my last stop then they became a paid update/subscription thingie which was a deal-breaker. Hopefully Wordpress doesn’t stop development and support. Bad trip mga plug-ins na hindi na supported. BTW, we’ll be at your neck of the woods end of the month.

@Jovan: yup 7 years since ABSi. How many companies can say they allow (at least tolerated) their employees to blog? hehe Blogger was too slow with what I needed although it did eventually catch up.

  7. I started blogging around 2001-2002 and haven’t stopped since! I empathise with #6 and #7. :P

  8. Hi Mark,

Wow! 7 years! Here’s to more —- who cares about clicks! Clickmomukhamo!

If the kid can reach his left ear with his right hand, he can go to First Grade. I think your baby in blog years is more than 7 years…

Let’s start the discussion on how long a Blog Year should be….the factor should be like 7, so yours is a baby boomer and the books that you read reflect that :) I love “Giving” of Bill Clinton…makes me want to give more.

oh yeah, i remember when LJ was “for invitation” only!
i thought i’d never like LJ but the communities are fun.
sana nga hindi mag-sell out ang WP.

babalik kayo dito? miss nyo na FL?! LOL
maybe we can meet up - lemme know na lang :D

  10. Shiloah

Wow, congratulations! Wow, if I’d kept blogging, I’d have been blogging for 10 years now. I miss it :( Keep it up! :)

  11. @Junnie: Thank you! I actually tried reaching my left ear with my right hand! LOL. I’ve always thing blogs are just the recent extension of ‘homepages’ (remember those? geocities, tripod, xoom?). So if there’s a need for self-expression in writing or in images, there will always be personal pages and self web-publishing.

    @Pen: sent you email.

@Shiloah: Thank you! And your blog was a great read, something sorely missing these days. It is still missed. :)

  12. congratulations bossing. pitong taon na pala. ang tagal na ano? yung blog mo nga ang isa sa mga unang nabasa ko. kayo ni ibalik.

tama yung observation mo, marami na ngayong blog ang business orientated. i’m not saying it’s bad. iba lang kaysa nung early years.

    musta na lang kay petite.

  13. salamat! subukan ko pa din gumawa ng original content. kaunti na lang gumagawa nun — buti ka pa na-sustain mo.

    si ibalik MIA hehe.
