Tom Hanks couldn't shake his nice guy persona but he gives it the old college try to give life to a skirt-chasing, alcoholic congressman. Great performances from the Oscar winners (especially Philip Hoffman). OMG was that Emily Blunt? Rarr.

Disappointing adaptation of Pullman's first book. Great performances and spot-on casting drowned in gorgeous CG and lengthy expositions. Chris Weitz just didn't spend enough time making us care about what happens to the characters.

30 Days of Night (2007)
6/10
2007-10-19 20:04
This would've ranked higher if only I could say with conviction why exactly this is a great movie. This vampire movie doesn't er...suck... but it's not a stand out either. Great performances, solid story (practically followed the graphic novel to the letter), great shots by the director. It's really better than it should be but there was something missing to make it totally awesome. For an R-Rated movie, they were surprisingly restrained with the gore. Another mystery is how could Melissa George look so sexy despite the thick anorak.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
6/10
2007-10-16 20:00
The costumes were gorgeous, sufficient enough bodices were ripped and Cate Blanchett was on form as usual but there's something lacking in this sequel. Not enough Geoffrey Rush? Director Shekhar Kapur seems like he couldn't focus enough to follow on the good things he had and kept jumping from perfectly composed shot to another. Don't come to this movie expecting a history lesson.

Michael Clayton (2007)
7/10
2007-10-13 19:55
As Empire Magazine review said "Heads will be scratched before they roll." It could be a frustrating movie to those with the constant diet of jump-cuts and cgi-overload. The performances are great and here's further proof George Clooney is more than just a pretty face. It's Tilda Swinton who steals the movie though, as we see her corporate-ladder climbing schemer literally sweat it out.

The Kingdom (2007)
6/10
2007-10-04 19:52
Better than average action movie but ultimately paints itself into a corner. While Jamie Foxx and his team try to avoid the Rambo & Chuck Norris one-man-army approach, in the end, they do it anyway. Still, props for its attempt to balance its point of view.

Across the Universe (2007)
6/10
2007-09-23 19:50
What could go wrong with a romantic drama featuring songs by the Beatles? A lot. Think of the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton's mediocre Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. But thankfully Julie Taymor isn't quite the disaster people make it out to be. The story is simple enough: a young shipworker from Liverpool goes to the US where he meets an all-American girl in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. It is of course, a metaphor for the current happenings in the world. The inherent power of the Beatles' songs move the movie despite some places where it drags and some of the characters arcs doesn't seem to make sense. The visual flourishes were great but few and far between. The cameos (Bono and Joe Cocker) only serves to remind the viewer what professional singers can do to the Beatles music. Still, it's an entertaining enough movie if you're a Beatles fan. Lots of nod to the Fab Four in this movie. (Joe Anderson, who plays Maxwell, has the uncanny resemblance to Kurt Cobain.)

3:10 to Yuma (1957)
5/10
2007-09-13 19:49
Short but tension filled western opera of a down on his luck rancher trying to make some money by delivering an outlaw to a prison train. Not one of the best westerns out there but definitely ranks up there.

Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
7/10
2007-09-13 19:46
Shoot 'Em Up is a check-your-head-at-door pure fun. Paper thin plot, gun porn, Paul Giamatti chewing up the scenery plus Monica's Belluccis made it watchable. If you liked Crank, you'll love Shoot 'Em Up.

3:10 to Yuma (2007)
7/10
2007-09-09 19:49
Unlike most remakes these days that are essentially pointless, 3:10 to Yuma is actually superior to the original. Christian Bale's desperate rancher is given more motivation for undertaking the dangerous task of delivering Russel Crowe's charismatic outlaw to justice. While Bale and Crowe deliver great performances, Crowe's right hand man played by Ben Foster almost steals the movie. Although he's not headlining movies yet, Foster's been around in memorable roles which actually challenge his skills as an actor. He's much better actor than Shia LeBouf and his choices like this one ensures he'll be around much longer than LeBouf.

Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (2006)
7/10
2007-08-29 00:54
Curse of the Golden Flower has such luscious visuals that you can forgive Yimou Zhang for some of the more outrageous choices (hello? cleavage galore?) in this period piece. Li Gong stands out as the empress to Chow Yun Fat's emperor. Good pace, thin plot, acceptable action sequences.

I've always wanted to see Raise the Red Lantern and strangely enough it's only been recently available at Netflix. From what I've read this 2007 MGM DVD release is a vast improvement from the previous versions. It's easy to see how director Zhang Yimou earned international acclaim with this movie. A very young Gong Li is also featured in a star making role. I actually liked this better than Curse of the Golden Flower.

Disturbia (2007)
4/10

I hate thrillers with stupid characters and this one has a couple of those. Shia LeBouf is approaching Kristen Dunst unlikeability for me. Watch Rear Window instead. That one has a great director and great performances from its cast. Grace Kelly gets sexy without showing skin -- unlike most young actresses today.

If John Hughes would make his movies today, this might probably be one of them. A hilarious, no holds barred look at the awkward transition of boys to men is examined as the protagonists try to score booze and with the girls. McLovin for the win!

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

2007-08-03 00:32
Paul "What's a Steadicam" Greengrass delivers a solid but not great third act to the Bourne franchise. The kinetic camera work is a bit overdone and there's nothing here we haven't seen in the previous two movies. Still, entertaining enough for a trip to the theater.

Sunshine (2007)
8/10
2007-07-29 00:58
Trainspotting's Boyle delivers a riveting sci-fi movie. A space drama reminiscent of 2001 instead of Star Wars, Sunshine focuses on the drama of 8 scientists and astronauts instead of the tech and CGI effects. The last 3rd of the movie becomes a stretch but can be forgiven. Definitely for the big screen.

Renaissance (2006)
7/10
2007-07-28 01:05
Wasn't able to catch this in theaters. This is a highly stylized French sci-fi motion-capture based animation rendered in black & white. While comparison to Sin City abouunds, the story is made of classic film noir stuff and the style (it took 6 years to complete) definitely lends it that unique edge. Great addition to your DVD library.
