I just had lunch and I’m craving for something sweet. I’ve been trying to cut down on food since Jovan was brought to the hospital. Well here are some of my “current” favorite desserts. I just have to think about it and not actually buy it :)

fried pichi-pichi
I tried this at a restaurant here in ABS. The restaurant is called Timpla and it specializes in Filipino cuisine. What I really like about them is that they’ve made versions of the ordinary fare that you eat at home. This dessert I really like. It’s called Fried Pichi-pichi with mangoes and vanilla ice cream. Yum! Pichi-pichi are small cassava cakes with coconut. With this dessert they fried the pichi-pichi until it was crunchy outside but still chewy inside then drizzled some mango sauce with mango bits. Plus added vanilla ice cream. It’s really Good!

ube bar
I discovered the Ube bar when I went to Pearl Farm with my friend Micky. Ever since then, I’ve asked all those who would go to Davao to bring these home. I recently received a whole box when one of the Tantra guys went there for the Kadayawan Festival. The guys found it a little weird. But it’s similar to the pastillas.

half moon bibingcrepe
If you’re tired of the usual bibingka. This is one treat that you shouldn’t miss. It’s across Friday’s Resto in Tomas Morato extension. They have a lot of choices for the filling – choco cheese, corn cheese, just cheese. My favorite is the corn cheese. Quite heavy on the tummy though. Better if you share this with your friends.

heavenly dessert at saints
I don’t know what this cake is called. During my recent trip to the doctor, I found this yummy dessert in Saint’s. For P60 pesos, it was worth every bite. It had mocha icing with a crispy chocolate crust. Saints is a small cafe inside St. Luke’s Hospital. They also serve lunch and dinner, I heard their crispy pata is also good.

my thumb is sore from chopping fresh chili (siling labuyo). i totally forgot to hold it by the stalks when i was removing the seeds for the dipping sauce of the Nasi Ayam. initially i thought that i burned the finger when i was cooking the rice. then when i put my thumb in my mouth i suddenly felt the burning sensation of the sili. oh boy. Nasi Ayam – roasted chicken, a little similar to hainanese chicken since it is served with rice the spicy hot dipping sauce tastes really good. this would be one of the dishes that i will be preparing for my friends.

today was the last class for Asian cooking. i’m now changing my birthday menu for the nth time. two more weekends left and the month long festivities will start. i already have a pre birthday celebration with my high school friends next week.

yesterday i bought a paellera, i will serve paella in one of the dinners. i just haven’t decided if this will be served for my family or my interactive friends. well once i’ve finalized the menu, i will definitely post some recipes here.

2 more sessions and we’re done with cooking class.

The new executive chef of the White House is a Filipina! Here name is Cristeta Comerford, who studied Food Technology at the University of the Philippines.

Imagine the dishes that she will be preparing for the First Family and their guests! Congrats to her, and cheers to the many meals and banquets for the guests of the White House.

Only 4 sessions left for the Culinary class and we’re done. Last weekend we had pasta and rice. One of the highlights was making our own pasta for the baked lasagna.

Check out our pics!

The class always ends with picture taking. This is the first time that I get to join the group since parang ako ang official photographer.

Perfectly baked lasagna, firm and solid lasagna not the soggy kind.

One of my favorites, Paella Valenciana – the rice had so much flavor!

it’s been raining here in Manila almost everyday, alam mo kung anong bagay? steaming hot champorado with milk and strips of salami! i always forget to ask my yaya to buy malagkit (short grained rice) for the champorado. the instant champorado doesn’t feel and taste the same way.

i’m now thinking of more comfort foods. on a bad day i’d eat cheetos (crunchy) with a glass (err one 1.5 liter) of coke. then there’s this chocolate cake in magallanes that i also like. slices are sold here in ABS- CBN at the 13th floor for 55pesos. Ice cream – double dutch flavor can also brighten my day. if i’m in the food trip mode, i’d go for dimsum. i like hakaw, siomai and radish cake with hoisin sauce.
