I write about living, loving, learning, and taking the occasional leaps of faith in this side of the world.
“Petite” is my nickname. That would also be a good description of me, actually.
My aunt on my mother’s side gave me this nickname only days after I was born. The name has stuck, even after some thirty-odd years. I love it!
I’m currently residing with my husband, Mark, in California. Mark is a cool, funny guy, who makes me laugh out loud. He also makes me smile, quietly, which in my opinion takes more talent and skill.
Why SunshineGirl?
I was born and raised in beautiful, wonderful Cebu, Philippines, which is a tropical island blessed with lots of sunshine. I’m now living in the Golden State, which is also a sunshin-y kind of place. I love sunshine. I have a usually sunny personality.
See?
One of the things I enjoy doing most is…travelling!
In the Philippines, I’ve gone spelunking in Sagada, white-water rafting and canopy-walking in Cagayan de Oro, and swimming in Malapascua with friends.
I’ve also been to Leyte and Southern Leyte (where my parents reside and where I vacationed most summers and holidays when I was younger), as well as Boracay, Davao City, Baguio, La Union, Tagaytay and Batangas.
Before California, I lived and worked in Metro Manila for 4 years, and then in Florida for close to 3. I’ve visited Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and New York City.
One of my goals for the next ten years is to travel around the world with Mark.
Other Things I Love:
- Taking photos
- Cooking
- Running. I’m going to run a 5K and a half-marathon this year. I ran in two 5K races in 2006, and plan to run in another two in 2007.
- Reading good books, especially those by Umberto Eco, Neil Gaiman, Neal Stephenson, Martin Amis, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabelle Allende, Amy Tan, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowlings and Isaac Asimov
- Watching movies
- Hanging out and having good conversations with friends
- Helping others, as best I can
- Eating good food, especially seafood such as tuna fish, crabs, shrimps, lobsters and mussels. Yum!
- Writing short stories and blog entries
- Working towards the dream of living in a beach-side house with Mark, writing all day long, and eating the freshest fruits and seafood. Yes, it is good to dream!
Favorite quotes:
our pockets full of dreams.”
- an old Proverb from Romania
- comedian Jonathan Winters
Everyday I’m swimming closer to my ship. And I’ve learned that the very act of “swimming out” is itself good for character-building, and good for the soul.

Hello Fatima,
So I wish you a lot of fun with your Weblog. Nice to know you…
I hope it’s ok to write in this comment form. I want to thank you for using my wordpress style. I’m glad to know that you like it. I like your stories, I think Florida is a nice place on earth and I hope to see it with my own eyes… somewhere along the way
Greets from germany,
tommy
Hi, Tommy!
I’m very glad that you visited my site! I love your “Banana Smoothie” design, and when I first saw it in the WordPress competition in Alex King’s website, I thought to myself that you should have been the winner or at least one of the honorable mentions.
My husband Mark helped me with some of the design adjustments I wanted to make (such as using the sunflower), but I think your basic design is great!
Anyway, I hope you can visit Florida someday too. When you do, don’t hesitate to drop a note in the blog and hopefully we can meet you and show you around.
hallo to all my friends in st.bernard.
Just curious… are you the wife of Mark Gatela?
Thanks!
Minic
Hi, Minic! Yup, I am.
You must be the famous Minic Rivera of Cybercafe in Galleria. I heard a lot about you when I had just arrived in Manila (around ’98/’99). I went to Brandie’s photo exhibit in your cafe, but didn’t get to meet you then. It’s nice to finally “meet” you, even if it’s just online for now.
Hi!
Just a note to say that I’ve been corresponding with a young lady from Cebu for 1 year now (She’s 6 years younger than me). I went to meet her this past May. I already have plane fare to go back in October, when I will propose to her (I hope she say’s yes!) My plan is to start the paperwork when I return home to bring her here on a finace visa. I’m going to hire an attorney to do the legal stuff for me so I don’t make a make any mistakes. I’m wondering where you are in Florida, since I live in Broward County. And if you’re near me, can you recommend an attorney that’s very familiar with your country?
Hi, Tom!
I don’t know any Immigration lawyers on a personal basis to be able to recommend one. However, there’s a lawyer who used to write a column in Philippine Star (I’m not sure if he still does), and who is currently one of the hosts/resource persons in TFC’s (The Filipino Channel) new show, ‘Citizen Pinoy’. His name is Michael Gurfinkel, and his website is http://www.gurfinkel.com/. You can also click this link to read his press release about Citizen Pinoy.
I hope this information is helpful to you, and I wish you the best of luck!
Hey Petite,
