Last night I went up for air and took a break from my busy sked, and what do I discover? So You Think You Can Dance on FOX, Wednesdays at 8pm.
I know, I know, this show is the dancing equivalent of American Idol and I’m not really the world’s biggest AI fan.
Anyway. At around 9pm yesterday I planted myself in front of the TV with a snack and was getting ready to watch an episode of ‘The Simpsons’ which we had recorded earlier. Before going into the list of recorded shows I checked on FOX, just to see what was going on in the world. On the TV screen was a couple of dancers doing a boring hip-hop routine, and predictably enough the judges were underwhelmed by their performance.
I was getting ready to dismiss the show and move on, when I saw an undeniably Pinoy face on the screen, which piqued my interest. Yes dears, I’m talking about Ryan Conferido, who hails from Downey, California. No, I don’t actually really know if he is Pinoy, but he sure does look like one (and I’m getting the vibes that he is, you know what I mean?)

Ryan Conferido
he looks Pinoy, diba?
(photo from the Fox website)
I stayed to watch a few minutes, just to see how he’d do. And boy, was I impressed! This young man was, until recently, ‘just’ a breakdancer with a group called Six Step Crew. Tonight, he had proved himself a talented performer. He and his partner danced the mambo, and although at practise he kept apologizing when he fumbled the steps, he was simply amazing during the show. Good thing, because he had sacrificed his cute anime character-looking hair for a slicked-back panahon ng lolo ko ‘do more appropriate for the mambo routine. I think the image change (for this dance at least) was way worth it for him.
(See the video clips at rickey.org, who is a purveyor of information about American Idol and the like.)

- Blake McGrath did a very fascinating sinuous move on the dance floor…sexy!
- I also think Melody Lacayanga looks Pinoy (does anyone know if she or Ryan is one?)
- Jonnis (Jonathan Tannis), who was in the bottom six, danced a fantastic number to the song “Bebot” by The Black-Eyed Peas. Rockin’ song, rockin’ moves! (Incidentally, a decent English translation of “Bebot” can be found in bughaw.com)

I love this show..hehe. I’m getting the same vibes from Ryan as well. And how about Melody? My husband thinks she is. I think so too but not really sure.
I was so happy when I heard Bebot for Jonnis’ routine. I was like, “OMG, that’s BEP’s Bebot” .. LOL
hi, dexie! guess what? we’re right! both ryan conferido and melody lacayanga are filipino-americans, according to nationmaster.com.
awesome. i love supporting a fellow pinoys
when Melody started crying about how other people expects her to be a doctor or a Nurse to have a succesful career, I kinda knew she’s pinay..LOL. That’s a typical yet sad fact among Filipno families.
He looks Pinoy and I’d be willing to bet he is (tho I don’t bet LOL). I figure, if someone has a name like that and looks like he does, he’s got to be Pinoy (how many other Asian countries have Asian-looking folks with Spanish names? Of course, now and then, you’ll see someone from s. America who can pass for Asian-ish). Maybe I should see the show since there’s no AI yet. Oy. I do watch it, I have to admit.
Hi! I just happened to drop by, and i wanted to leave something. Yeah, Ryan does look pinoy, and Melody really looks Pinay too. I LOVE HIS ANIME LOOKING HAIR! lol, and i love the song Bebot. A friend sent me that song, Black Eyed Peas sing it, wow, i love it.
SUPPORTING THE PILIPINOS :]
Hi,
Thanks so much for writing a blog about the show. I’ve been going crazy since I watched the show when Jonnis performed his number. I wanted to know what that song was and I had a feeling it was Black Eyed Peas. Now I can definitely have this song. It’s stuck in my head. Anyways, I was glad to see Filipino representing. I think Jonnis might be mistiso too. Ryan is very talented and so as Melody. I will most definitely follow this show now. Too bad I didn’t get to watch it when the show really came on so that I could vote for Jonnis to stay. I think him and Snow should stay.
Thanks again and keep up the blog!
Iolee
dexie: my sentiments exactly…i’m really into supporting fellow pinoys. and i think ryan especially deserves it because he’s so talented. i hope he gets his big break.
Phisch: most of my friends watch AI too!
and yes, most of them have asian features AND spanish names. hehehe!
Elisha: “bebot” is great! i just luuuv it! i play it a lot these days and even do tae-bo with it.
thanks for dropping by!
Iolee: i’m glad to be of help.
yes, “bebot” is indeed the kind of song that sticks in your head, no? it’s very dance-able too. and i’m proud that a purely tagalog song by a proud pinoy was able to break into the international airwaves and become popular. i’m proud of apl.de.ap as well…as we say back home…astig! (closest translation of astig: kick-ass)
thanks for dropping me a note!
Ryan is 100% filipino!!! He’s my wife’s cousin. His background..
He comes from a conservative family of filipino Seventh Day Adventists and he went to H.S. at San Gabriel Adventist Academy. You shoulda seen his parents expression when they first saw him dance on TV.
Rudeboy: that is so cool!
thanks for sharing that info. i hope you can divulge more info about ryan in the coming days. we’re rooting for him!
[...] ryan having fun – doing a headstand at the end of the show ========== Update (at 0113 am 08/25): As usual, Rickey already has video clips of last night’s show at his site. Incidentally, Rickey is also Pinoy. And according to Rudeboy, so is Ryan. Galing! [...]
Yeah, I figured he was SDA when he said his religion frowns upon dancing.
So Ryan is pinoy! that clears up alot of questions (unlike his name) he is so cu…talented and i hope he wins!
GUESS WHO IS HALF PINOY! Alan Frias!!
Tinangel: did he say that during the auditions? sayang i wasn’t able to see the episodes prior to august 17. honestly, i didn’t think i would enjoy it as much as i do now. i’ve even told my friends to watch the show too.
quess: i hope he wins too!
i did read somewhere that alan frias is half-pinoy, but i haven’t been able to look into that as yet. do you have more info? thanks!
wow! here i was googling ’so you think you can dance’ and trying to confirm whether melody or ryan are indeed filipinos. and alan too? wow! they are great! in shows like this (singing and dancing), there has got to be a filipino. kung wala, parang sayang din yung dami natin dito sa mundo. bwahahaha.
i’m glad i’ve finally come to your site, after seeing you around ate pen’s site… mustamos?
gailT: korek! we filipinos have music in our hearts and souls, as evidenced by all that karaoke singing (and dancing to the karaoke singing) that we do everytime we have get-togethers.
it’s really nice to see fellow pinoys excel in the international arts and entertainment scene. i’m sure their moms and dads are proud.
i’m glad you visited me too! my hubby and pen are online friends, and i think pen lives in our general geographic area, although we haven’t met yet. btw, are you cebuano too? nice to ‘meet’ you in the blogosphere, gailT!
i miss doing karaoke. we don’t have one ourselves so i look forward to going to parties with karaoke. hehehe.
i love the feeling of finding pinoys exceling at what they love. bisan dili nako sila kaila, proud gihapon ko.
i always say i’m cebuano even though i did not actually live there. my father is a true-blue cebuano, from alcantara (so, whenever we go visit, i get spoiled by the white sand beaches). my mother is from ormoc, leyte, and that’s where i was born. but i actually was raised in another town in leyte called isabel, before i moved to study high school in tacloban, leyte. so, i guess i belong to all these places.
i’ll link you up, ate.
Yes….Melody is Full blooded pinay with 2 talented sisters from Daly City, CA where 40% of the population is Filipino. She has been performing since I believe 5 years old. She was even a member of a Filipino Youth Group in Daly City called YFEC or Young Filipino Entertainer’s Club back in the early ’90’s. Did you know Melody can sing too? She is also a great singer.
Allan Frias is half Filipino. His Dad is Filipino and his Mom’s Mulatta(part black, Italian and I forgot the 3rd one). He lives in San Francisco and used to be a choreographer and member of a dance group called “Mind Over Matter.”
gailT: uy, we have more in common than i initially thought! i was born and raised in cebu (where i lived with my lola while i went to school there), but my parents have resided in southern leyte since i was 6, and i visit them there during vacations.
linking you up, too!
Cole: thanks for the information – it is much appreciated!
you seem to know melody quite well, at least more than most people i’ve had the chance to talk to so far. are you friends/neighbors/relatives? i’m sure others would appreciate more info about melody too – hope you can share more!
I dialed and redialed voting for Ryan from the end of the show till 11 30 when they woulden’t take calls anymore…Lets not let this Talented Master go home! He’s to great to ignore his talent…And to the one judge said he was the first half of the word bad@$$ i literally yelled (to the tv lol) “ya and your the other half!” lol i was quite upset and i loved how their hair matched!
Ryan? Filipino and SDA? Wow, that just made me like him more, haha. The kid has talent, too bad I can’t vote for him, coz I’m up here in Canada. Booo! Me
http://www.livejournal.com/users/limeu
if you have anymore info, please share =D please please please……… I’m begging yoooo, haha. I’m so gay
I just love melody and ryan! Proud to be pinoy! Is the program popular in the Philippines? I haven’t heard any buzz about them in the Philippines, which is really sad.
So I see that Ryan and Melody are filipino, which isn’t too much of a surprise. However, Allan being filipino comes as a bit of a shock but when explained that he’s also black-mixed, then it definetly makes sense. There’s was another person on the show that you all would be surprised to find out is mixed-filipino and that was Jonnis. His mother is actually filipino/spanish and his father is caucasian. I have a friend who is friends with him back in NJ and I must say I was quite shocked
) I’m so proud of all of them. It’s about time filipinos get the respect and recognition that we all deserve!
Alan Frias is also Filipino and half black, he teaches a dance class at Dance Mission in San Francisco. Check it out.
Hi! I’ve been following the show since its first episode. My interest was piqued when I heard a Pinoy song in the show and that made me think that Jonnis could be Filipino. Suspected Ryan and Melody too because of their looks and names. Glad to hear that they are indeed Pinoy! Never thought that Allan was also of Filipino descent. =)
MABUHAY ANG PINOY!!!
Thanks for all the info!
what was the sang jonathan danced for
Wow what a surprise…alan is half-pinoy! what makes me wonder is whether jonnis is pinoy or not given than he danced to bebot. btw, sytycd is shown on a free channel in the phils on fridays at 10pm up to now. pretty bad timeslot. it’s shown weekly so i think it will end by feb or jan 06 pa. i’m not sure if it rates well coz it’s shown at the same time with soap giants in other channels.
but hey wow galing talaga ni melody. i enjoy watching her. and ryan looks so cool with the astig hairstyle and even more astig moves.
hi all…. its so sad that this show has just started for about a couple of weeks here in the Philippines and its not that popular here (kasi sa channel 5 lang pinapalabas)… my mom loves Ryan… its really nice to know that he’s a Filipino… (duh… i feel so stupid for just knowing it now…cuz all of you out there knew this info for a long time now) hehehehe… any updates about them (ryan and melody).. salamat po…
I LOVE RYAN C. SO MUCH U SHUD GO TO HIS XANGA AND STUFF OMG hes the sweetest ever and hes so real and i just loved his dancing but hes so much deeper
