my feet, my lovely, aching feet!
I hate getting sick. I’ve only ever stayed sick overnight in the hospital once, back in 6th grade, for gastritis. But lately I’ve been visiting the doctor a bit more often than I would have wanted, for miscellaneous aches and a couple of somewhat more serious conditions.
This latest physical challenge, however, has been more annoying than usual. It started about a couple of months ago, when I would wake up with a sore right heel. I wouldn’t feel any pain the previous evening, nothing strange throughout the night, but as soon as my right foot touched the floor, I would feel a sharp pain in my heel.
After bearing with it for weeks, I finally went to my doctor, who diagnosed me as having PLANTAR FASCIITIS.
It started out with just a slight discomfort. However, I started feeling the pain not only after getting out of bed in the morning, but also after I’ve been walking around at work then sitting down for a while. As soon as I got up to walk again, the pain would be there. It got progressively worse until one day, it hurt so much I was limping around and grimacing in pain. The pain felt like someone had put a nail on the floor and I had stomped my heel directly on it. It took 800mg of Ibuprofen that a friend at work gave me to dull the edge of the pain, but it was bad enough for me to call the doc for an urgent appointment.
My first mistake was thinking it was just the usual soreness that disappears within a few days. My second mistake was thinking it was gouty arthritis, which my dad has, and trying to deal with it by watching what I ate. My third, and possibly worse, mistake was not searching for information about it on the Internet. I’m usually an information hound - why didn’t I google “heel pain” several weeks back? I still couldn’t figure out why, but probably it goes back to mistake #1 - I just didn’t think it was that bad.
Since the diagnosis, I’ve also seen a Podiatrist (a foot doctor) who advised rest, ice, and high heels. I’ve also had custom orthotics made, which I now wear when I go to work or out for a walk (no more running for now).
I always try to be compliant to medical advice, but it hasn’t been easy. Complete rest is not really an option for me, as I love going outdoors, or going out for a night in town. The ice I don’t mind, as it really soothes my pain. High heels, though counter-intuitive (as my podiatrist loves to say), actually help, as they prevent my plantar fascia from becoming too stretched out.
The pain is still there, and I still limp from time to time. I’ve had to pay attention to how I walk, so that I don’t overly “guard” my right foot and in doing so put more stress on my left foot (I did it once and I ended up with two aching feet instead of one!). I also take Ibuprofen as needed, but only 200mg each time, which usually works. I’ve just had to make do with easy walks instead of my invigorating fun runs. And these days I’ve been spending more time on the couch, my right foot up on a frozen bottle of water, willing for my recovery to speed up.
And so the public service announcement from my right foot is this: if you or anyone you know has pain in their feet or ankles, do take it seriously and don’t wait too long to go to the doctor. Our feet take so much stress during our everyday lives but they are often ignored, when they should be given much more attention than they usually get. Love your feet, people, and spare yourselves needless pain.

ey fudz!! get well soon. i have a recurring pain on my right foot as well. it’s on top of the foot and the pain is usually relieved when i wear high-heeled shoes (and i wear flip-flops all the time, too! so i guess i should try to minimize that)… R also is suffering from foot pain, but i think he has gouty arthritis. dern this old age!

landed here from Toni of Wifely Steps… i had plantar facia about 10 years ago due to my flat feet and wearing bad shoes (no arches). sadly, there is no cure. but you can exercise the muscles/tendons in your feet to make them more stretchy and, thus, avoid plantar fascitis. my hubby has been battling plantar fascitis for 15 years because he also has super flat feet.
let me share some tips that have helped me/us:
1. freeze a bottle of water and roll it under your feet back and forth for 15 minutes every night. the rolling is the key here as this motion stretches the muscles/tendons. repeat as often during the day as you can.
2. wear shoes with arches — New Balance shoes are highly recommended by both my podiatrist and regular physician. wear it at home instead of slippers or bare feet.
3. never, ever go bare feet at home. ever. they will exacerbate your condition. don’t wear flat slippers either.
4. there are plantar fascia boots that you can wear during sleeping at night but very cumbersome. basically, the boots enable your toes to point up when sleeping. my podiatrist told me that there is now surgery for plantar fascia. but, and here’s the big but, the condition will surely return later on if the tendons become tight again.
hope your feet feel better. the rolling-a-frozen-water-bottle trick under my foot has been the one best thing to do. that and wearing footwear with arches and never going bare feet.

hi, everyone! thanks for your concern and/or tips to relieve the pain. i really appreciate it!
x: my foot is feeling better now, thanks! i hope you see a doctor as well if your foot pain persists. i’ve learned that causes of foot pain such as plantar fasciitis and stress fractures resolve on their own at times, but if the pain persists, it’s better to be safe, right? and i think r should definitely see a doc if it’s possible gouty arthritis. my dad has it, and when it strikes, the pain can be debilitating. better to have it under control early on.
purplegirl: thanks so much for a very comprehensive set of tips! you’re right - rolling a frozen bottle of water under my foot is one of the best things for relieving the pain. i used to just rest my foot on the bottle, but rolling the bottle has helped so much more. i also read somewhere that 15 minutes on/15 minutes off is the best way to do it, and that worked for me too. i now wear my custom orthotics with my work shoes, and OTC orthotics with the rest of my shoes. i wear nike percepts most of the time, but i’m checking out new balance shoes as well. again, thanks so much!
melissabee: thanks, girl!
toni: yup, it’s truly one of the most annoying kinds of pain i’ve ever felt. but it’s getting better now, yey!
deity: yikes! did you have your feet checked out already? what did the doc say? i hope it’s not plantar fasciitis too!
hehe, ok lang, the camera stayed with me a while too.
thanks in advance for sending it out!
rene: uh-oh, your symptoms sound very much like plantar fasciitis. it does resolve on it’s own in some cases, so maybe that’s what happened in your case.
and oh my - a fractured left arm?! let me guess - football injury?
i hope it’s completely healed by now!
junnie: oo nga, eto na yata yung signs of advancing age, hehehe.

i guess being up and about during work aggravates it. jet also has foot problems - sometimes it gets swollen after work. kailangan naka taas ang tiil pag nakahiga.

About 10 years ago, I had the exact same symptoms as you.
Fortunately (or unfortunately), the pain didn’t get progressively worse, so I never got around to seeing a doctor. I just assumed it was premature rheumatism (I was about 30 then).
After about 6 months of suffering from it, someone suggested it might be due to cold temperatures. (I slept in an airconditioned room). Anyway, to make a long story short, I started wearing thick (pang-winter) leg warmers that stretched from my feet up to my knees while sleeping.
And voila, after a month, the pain was entirely gone!
I haven’t had a recurrence since then.
No medicine, no therapy, no gadgets, no expenses required…
Hope it helps anyone who might read this.

unkle b: yah, it doesn’t help the condition that i’m on my feet for most of the time at work. minsan nga i’ve had to call in sick because it just hurts so much to walk. i hope jet’s foot problems don’t get worse! i’m sure mina-massage mo naman palagi.
deity: thanks, dearie!
spycegirl: wow, thanks so much for the tip! i do wear socks to sleep because my feet are always cold, but i’ve never thought of using leg warmers. these days i’m also wearing a foot brace while sleeping. i’m willing to try almost anything!
